Low Maintenance, High Reward
One of the biggest advantages of luxury vinyl plank is how easy it is to care for. Unlike hardwood, vinyl is waterproof and doesn't require refinishing or special treatments. But that doesn't mean it's maintenance-free.
Regular cleaning and a few smart precautions will keep your vinyl floors looking showroom-fresh and protect them from premature wear.
Quick Care Tips
Sweep or Vacuum Often
Dirt and sand can dull the surface over time. Sweep, dust mop, or vacuum (hard floor setting) every few days to prevent micro-scratches.
Damp Mop Weekly
Use a damp mop with warm water or a vinyl-specific cleaner. Vinyl is waterproof, but standing water can seep into seams on click-lock floors.
Use Felt Pads
Place felt pads under furniture legs to prevent indentation and scratching. Heavy furniture can leave permanent dents in vinyl over time.
Use Doormats
Place mats at all entrances to trap dirt and grit before it reaches your floors. Choose mats without rubber backing to avoid discoloration.
Detailed Care Guide
Daily Sweeping
Use a soft-bristle broom or microfiber dust mop to sweep high-traffic areas daily. This removes the grit that causes micro-scratches and dulls the surface over time.
Weekly Mopping
Mop with warm water and a few drops of dish soap or a vinyl floor cleaner. Wring the mop well — you want damp, not dripping. Rinse with clean water to avoid residue.
Spot Clean Spills
Wipe spills as they happen. For sticky messes, use a soft cloth with warm soapy water. For scuff marks, a tennis ball or Magic Eraser works surprisingly well.
Protect From Sunlight
Prolonged UV exposure can fade or discolor vinyl. Use curtains, blinds, or UV window film in rooms with heavy sun. Rotate rugs periodically to avoid uneven fading.
Things to Avoid
- Abrasive scrubbers and steel wool — these scratch the wear layer and permanently damage the finish. Always use soft cloths or microfiber pads.
- Acetone, bleach, and harsh chemicals — these can discolor or warp vinyl. Stick to mild cleaners or products labeled safe for vinyl floors.
- Dragging heavy appliances — always lift or use furniture sliders. Dragging a refrigerator or washer can gouge and tear the surface.
